I often wonder what people really look at when they see a piece of artwork.

Do we really care about the quality of the work? Or more about the subject matter or character being presented? I know that may seem like a crazy, negative way to look at things, but I'm starting to think that the subject matter dictates more to us than the picture itself. Of course, a quality painting of a well-known character is more desirable than a bad painting of that character, but without people being interested in the character, the debate between quality and crap would probably never even take place......because no one would even be looking.

I'm not trying to argue with human nature, but it just makes me sad to think that most of us are so bias when we look at things. And what IS quality anyway? Realism? Abstraction? Detail? Simplicity? Design? It's all opinion. Everyone has such a concrete view/understanding of what they respect in art/illustration that we tend to forget that none of us, including myself, really understand anything. I'm not talking about technical skills or hard work either. Many people understand those things all too well. All I'm asking is can't we just look at something and say "I enjoy this" without knowing why?

Nope.

It has to be judged, broken down, critiqued and torn apart. Based mostly on what the subject matter already means to the viewer. I think that sucks......

Don't get me wrong, I'm very thankful to be able to make a living as an illustrator and I hope to continue doing this for as long as I can; learning and discovering new possibilities and ways to accomplish a certain scene, mood or feeling. After all, making people happy when they see a painting or drawing IS very rewarding.

BUT, do I care about the subject matter (characters) I'm painting? Not really. Painting famous characters or popular themes is a wonderful way to get work in front of large audiences, because they advertise themselves, but one day, it'd be nice to create something that I actually care about. I haven't painted something important to me in a long long time. Again, bringing someone's story to life or satisfying a person's idea for a commission is something I'm very proud of, but artistically, creatively and personally I don't feel like I'm accomplishing anything. It's someone else's vision.

Lately I just feel hollow. And tired......

What am I interested in? I have no idea........I'm terrified of the day when I do try to paint something only for the sake of enjoying the composition, light, brush strokes, pencil lines, or mood of the art alone, because it will probably only be judged or viewed on it's subject matter. I hope I'm wrong. I certainly don't mean to offend any artists on here that work hard day in and day out. I'm sure a shitload of people will disagree with this whole way of thinking, but since I don't write many journals and I don't have any upcoming events to mention, I thought I'd write about something that's on my mind. Think of it what you will...

I agree with fredblhd's first comment above. Make the time to do something you think is bad-ass. Both as a musician and a writer, I've felt this way 100%, and sometimes you have to take some You Time and do what you gotta do to stay fulfilled. Your labors of love will remind you why you started doing what you're doing.

For what it's worth, your stuff consistently looks bad-ass. Hope to work with you soon.

I think this is a great insight, and it actually makes me think of what I told my wife not long ago; that the reason I could never be a professional artist is because I don't want to 'hate' art and the making of it. I may not be nearly as good as you, but there are days where I just don't plain feel like drawing, and to think that I would have to be forced to draw when I don't feel like it would push me to hate it.
When I look at a piece of art, I do try to judge it by its quality, rather than the subject matter. For example, there's a particular piece here in dA that has attracted a lot of attention (you may have seen it) that depicts a field of naked women with a field of worms. The reason it has attracted a lot of attention is because, in the piece, it is very much implied that the women are having sex with the worms, but the act is never depicted outright. Personally, I don't care much for the subject matter of the piece. However, the execution; the quality of the artwork is amazing, and I love the piece for the quality, not because of the subject matter.
I added you to my watch list because I think the quality of your work is amazing; it just helps that I also happen to like your subject matter. However, like the commenter before me said, if you can find the time to scribble something just for you, you should definitely take it. Maybe you have ten minutes in between work, so scribble something you want in ten minutes, and if you like it enough, save it. Turn it into a WIP, and finish it, even if it takes you some time. I think you'll appreciate that you did. :)

Thank you for your insight. I really appreciate that. Yeah, I think the subject matter is something kind of neutral to me on these. I'm not against it, nor do I care deeply about it. Some days are just a bit confusing and I start thinking too much about work....haha I'll definitely start taking some time to experiment with subject matter that speaks to me. I think it's awesome that you do dig the characters in these. I actually like many of these characters too, I just get wrapped up in the crazy "art" part of the pieces and start wondering what they mean. Thank you for adding me to your watch list:-)

I tend to think too much when it comes to art, sometimes. I'm actually at the point where my art displeases me, because I tend to overthink when I'm creating. However, if you look at two of my latest pieces (Christina Aguilera and the rhino), I just drew those very loosely and, personally, I think are some of my best works. Not only that, but I enjoyed making them, as opposed as the majority of my other works. I'm experimenting with that style now, where I just loosen up and let my pencil do the thinking. Maybe that's what you need, too: Just loosen up, and stop thinking too much. :)
